As a multi-instrumentalist and composer, Robert Len explores rich and diverse soundscapes. Using instruments from around the world, his original compositions are unexpected and fresh. His long musical quest has helped him find unique ways to unite the music of people from 5 continents.

Robert got his musical start at age 12 playing guitar in his family’s band. His father was a talented fiddler. He immersed Robert and his 6 brothers and sisters in traditional Québécois music when they were growing up. The family band was contracted regularly to perform on stage.

His career truly got underway when he began studying the trumpet. During his University years, Robert was a member of the group “Barclay Road”. Assuming composing duties as well as the trumpet, he performed on many occasions at the Montreal Jazz Festival. During this time period, he also accompanied many famous jazz musicians on stage, such as: Oliver Jones, Ranee Lee, Colin James, Diane Schurr and Shirley Bassey. He has also performed with local Montreal band “La Bottine Souriante” and the pianist Richard Abel.

In 1996, Robert developed a passion for instruments from all over the world. His first discovery was the rich and inspiring sound of Irish Uillean Pipes. With this wonderful musical find, a new artistic process came to him. He commenced his work integrating ethnic instruments in new ways to create melodies full of bountiful possibilities. The spirit of the instrument is conserved while new and different tones and colors are evoked.

Some of the instruments he has used are: Native American flutes and drums; Irish, Chinese, Indian and Bulgarian flutes, the sitar, Tibetan singing bowls and many others. These instruments are accompanied by multiple percussions and contemporary instruments. He has even crafted a flute of his own design.

Robert Len is not only a multifaceted artist, he is also personally involved in many important causes. International aid for children and the protection of our biodiversity are two examples.  He has passed on his deep love and passion for music to countless young people over the years as a beloved teacher. This deep commitment to his craft is now evident to his fans, always ready to be transported by the intensity and creativity of Robert’s sound.
